چکیده

The following information is missing from the Competing Interest section: The authors have the following competing interests to declare: Dr. Wells is on the Scientific Advisory Board of Akashi Therapeutics (was Dart Therapeutics), a company developing treatments for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Dr. Wells is also a member of the Treat-NMD Advisory Committee for Therapeutics that provides confidential guidance on the translation and development path of therapeutics programs in rare neuromuscular diseases. This does not alter the authors' adherence to all PLOS ONE policies on sharing data and materials. In the title and abstract of this article, the word “Poloxomer” should be “Poloxamer.” The correct title is “Poloxamer 188 Has a Deleterious Effect on Dystrophic Skeletal Muscle Function.” The correct citation is: Terry RL, Kaneb HM, Wells DJ (2014) Poloxamer 188 Has a Deleterious Effect on Dystrophic Skeletal Muscle Function. PLoS ONE 9(3): e91221. doi:10.1371/ journal.pone.0091221

Poloxomer 188 Has a Deleterious Effect on Dystrophic Skeletal Muscle Function

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked, fatal muscle wasting disease for which there is currently no cure and limited palliative treatments. Poloxomer 188 (P188) is a tri-block copolymer that has been proposed as a potential treatment for cardiomyopathy in DMD patients. Despite the reported beneficial effects of P188 on dystrophic cardiac muscle function, the effects of P188 on dystro...

Membrane-stabilizing copolymers confer marked protection to dystrophic skeletal muscle in vivo

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a fatal disease of striated muscle deterioration. A unique therapeutic approach for DMD is the use of synthetic membrane stabilizers to protect the fragile dystrophic sarcolemma against contraction-induced mechanical stress. Block copolymer-based membrane stabilizer poloxamer 188 (P188) has been shown to protect the dystrophic myocardium. In comparison, the ...

Poloxamer 188 reduces the contraction-induced force decline in lumbrical muscles from mdx mice.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a genetic disease caused by the lack of the protein dystrophin. Dystrophic muscles are highly susceptible to contraction-induced injury, and following contractile activity, have disrupted plasma membranes that allow leakage of calcium ions into muscle fibers. Because of the direct relationship between increased intracellular calcium concentration and muscle dysfun...

A new therapeutic effect of simvastatin revealed by functional improvement in muscular dystrophy.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a lethal, degenerative muscle disease with no effective treatment. DMD muscle pathogenesis is characterized by chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and fibrosis. Statins, cholesterol-lowering drugs, inhibit these deleterious processes in ischemic diseases affecting skeletal muscle, and therefore have potential to improve DMD. However, statins have not bee...

Praoxon-induced changes in the function of chicken biventer cervices nerve-muscle preparation and the reversal of such changes by pralidoxime

One of the most toxic effects of organophosphate (OP) poisoning has been the paralysis of skeletal muscles that can lead to paralysis of respiratory muscles and death. However, oximes are the only antidotes available to reverse or prevent such toxic effects of OP insecticides and nerve chemical warfare agents. In the present research work, the effect of different concentrations of paraoxon (as ...
